There’s something about living a locavore life which excites me. My husband and I not as frugal as some friends. We splurged on a 28-week CSA, and I’m willing to pay extra at the farmers markets. But sometimes I like the free stuff.
Today was a lesson in how to practice sustainability and healthy eating while still enjoying your treats. It was a special occasion for my CrossFit gym. The old owners are moving to New Orleans and wanted to have a going away party. We all wanted our new lords and masters to feel welcome with pomp and circumstance.

I almost missed my chance to do so. Every year, Chris and I sign up for a CSA- community supported agriculture. Last year, though, we received some bad news. Our normal farm-share, Ebb Tide, was closing up shop. We needed to find another farm.

Whole30 is a program where you remove certain foods from your diet, such as processed foods, addictive sugary foods, foods with a history of causing inflammation, and foods with high correlation to allergies. For thirty days, you maintain a steady diet of whole vegetables and unprocessed meats. This is essentially resetting your body by removing all the potential negative foods, and letting your body settle into a completely natural and whole diet. I have been struggling with how to convey my most important fitness message to my audience for some time. My main motivation and inspiration for getting fit was conservation. Doing my part to stay healthy and help the planet. But it has also been to create a healthy, positive attitude about our fitness, and conservation. This is where it gets tricky, and I have wrangled with my message. The situations our favorite animals are facing are dire. They need immediate, and often drastic action. To make the most positive impact, we need to change a lot of our eating habits, consumer habits, and even our workout habits. But as I’ve been told, learning about the dire situations our planet faces doesn’t actually inspire people, it brings them. Sometimes I come across “deals of a lifetime” and I get completely suckered in. I’d like to brush off my naive notions to “trying new things”, but the fact of the matter is when it comes to food and health products, I am one of the most gullible customers on earth. So, when I saw a deal of getting “farm fresh complete meals” (with protein, vegetables, and even spices included) advertised “for Freeland” I assumed it was a local company and I’d be getting a couple of awesome meals delivered to my door. I entered the coupon and got the large package (to feed a family of 4) because, well, some of you have met my husband. He’s not fat, not by any stretch of the imagination, but that boy can EAT. Last year at this time, I was just getting ready to move to Oregon, but I was also planning for my container garden I wanted for out balcony. I had bought several seed packets of various spices, but also kale, green bell peppers, and of course, zucchini, because you can never go wrong with zucchini.
By June I had several small seedlings that were promising to be productive and prosperous. I had divided them into several larger pots, purchased plant food and kept my fingers crossed that I would soon be enjoying the fruits of my labor.
