30 Days of ZooFit: Day 22- Everyday is Earth Day

There are few exciting holidays for zookeepers. Christmas and Thanksgiving are often spent with our fur/feather/scaled families because, guess what? Animals have to eat. Daily. It’s weird, I know. But such is life of a zookeeper.

Know what holidays zookeepers DO get excited over? April 22. Earth Day. It’s not exactly celebrated by everyone, but it is an important day for zookeepers. Earth Day is the one day out of the year everyone gets to be a zookeeper and care for the planet. Continue reading 30 Days of ZooFit: Day 22- Everyday is Earth Day

30 Days of ZooFit: Day 20- Watoto’s Rumble

I’ve often wondered how it would feel for someone to love me so much, they peed whenever they saw me.

This was how Bamboo, a fifty-year old Asian elephant, greeted her best friend, retired zookeeper Chuck, whenever he visited. She would squeal with excitement, and when she couldn’t contain herself anymore, Bamboo would relieve herself. It was a sight to see. Continue reading 30 Days of ZooFit: Day 20- Watoto’s Rumble

30 Days of ZooFit: Day 19- Stay Positive

I’m having a little issue taking my own advice today. Stay positive. The difficulties getting into the published world of writing is becoming more and more clear. I know I have what it takes to stay the course, but I’m wondering if it’s worth it. Continue reading 30 Days of ZooFit: Day 19- Stay Positive

30 Days of ZooFit: Day 18- Setting Myself Up for a Successful Writer’s Conference

Tonight, I am traveling to Las Vegas for a writer’s conference. This is my first writer’s conference, but not my first professional conference, or my first conference in Las Vegas either. Las Vegas may not be my first choice for a vacation, but I’m not going to look at sights for this trip. In fact, because I’m not much of a lemur or lizard (I don’t bask in the sun), I doubt I’ll step outside the conference rooms. 30 Days of ZooFit: Day 17- Making the Most of What You Got

There’s something about living a locavore life which excites me. My husband and I not as frugal as some friends.  We splurged on a 28-week CSA, and I’m willing to pay extra at the farmers markets. But sometimes I like the free stuff.

30 Days of ZooFit: Day 16- Double Workout, a Healthy Obsession

A few years ago, when I became serious about getting in shape, I was gung ho. I joined a gym, signed up for a weight loss challenge, and began a journey which would lead many friends (but mostly non-friends) to claim I was obsessed. 30 Days of ZooFit: Day 14- Zoomaker and the Creation of a ZooFit Workout

Today we tried out a brand-new Conservation Hero WOD, the Dian Fossey. The late primatologist was popularized by the movie “Gorillas in the Mist”. Dian studied the mountain gorillas of Rwanda, and to honor her contribution to conservation and research of the then little-known species, I created a Time Ladder workout with Gorilla Lunges, Double Unders/Jump rope, and Lemur Sit-ups.

30 Days of ZooFit: Day 13- Save Room for Pie

Today was a lesson in how to practice sustainability and healthy eating while still enjoying your treats. It was a special occasion for my CrossFit gym. The old owners are moving to New Orleans and wanted to have a going away party. We all wanted our new lords and masters to feel welcome with pomp and circumstance.

So, we held a huge party with the entire membership. And there was a pie contest. Continue reading 30 Days of ZooFit: Day 13- Save Room for Pie

30 Days of ZooFit: Day 12- Stability and Variety

Stabilize before you mobilize. That’s what the Pilates instructor always says during class every week.
