100 Ways of Fitness Day 42

Washington Wednesday

Here’s a gem- pick a day of the week and eat only local foods for that day each week. I came up with Wednesday for mine. I was trying to figure out how to fit “local” with a day of the week and the closest I could come was wacky Wednesday (local-loco- wacky). But it was a huge stretch. I honestly don’t know how I came up with Washington Wednesday but whether you like it or eye roll, I think it’s going to stick.
Several things inspired Washington Wednesday. Barbara Kingsolver’s book “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle” had its influence. Meatless Monday definitely helped with the idea. I guess I’ve been wanting to dedicate a day to eating clean and green.

And while I forgot to take pictures of our food tonight, I can assure you we ate very well! Salmon with farro and onions for dinner. I had chicken and potatoes for lunch, apples and yogurt with honey for snacks, and oatmeal topped with egg for breakfast. Not too shabby for winter in Seattle. As the months grow warmer, our choices will grow exponentially- and I’m going to try to grow some of our own herbs and vegetables this summer. Simple things like zucchini, tomatoes, and mint.

I would love to see this idea take off. I know in August, September, and October many places hold a month long eating local challenge. I’m going to try to do that, especially later in the summer or early fall. A whole month of salmon and Dungeness crab? What could be wrong with that?

But I had a moment of gratitude for a day challenge like this when there were goodies in the office at work (I know, I finally got off my lazy arse and came in to work- enough practice sleeping and drinking tea!). I was tempted so bad, but trying to keep the spirit of then challenge of eating only local foods kept me from caving. And while I could have had a lot more to eat at work, I wanted to succeed, so I didn’t snack on extra food or sneak a little treat. It was a Washington Wednesday miracle!!

I think I found my trick to eating healthy everyday- weekday food challenges! If I can come up with a challenge for each day of the week, then I won’t be tempted to eat junk food!

Simplify Sunday (my Monday): everything you eat can only be wit pure ingredients. Nothing more than one to two items in each ingredient. So, bbq sauce- out. But making my own vinegarette with olive oil lemon and spices is okay.

Okay, that’s all I could think of. Well I have an idea for Thursday but it’s pretty lame.

Back to locavore days. I know you all don’t live I washington so Wednesday’s may not work for you..

Sleeping Beauty

I don’t know about all of you guys, but I for one am sick of being sick.

Mostly because I haven’t worked out in a week. Not that yoga is much of a workout. Maybe this was kismet that I should get sick on the month I am supposed to do nothing but my absolute least favorite exercise.

Instead I have gotten some much needed practice in the art of rest. I admit, I am horrible at sleeping. I swear, my body actually gets BORED sleeping a full 8 hours. But rest is what my body needs most, so I take my lessons where I can get them.

I have most definitely received at least 8 hours of sleep the last 4 days. I’ve not only gone to bed early and not gotten up early to workout, but I’ve been napping throughout the day too. I love naps. I mean, I don’t utilize them as often as I’d like, and I probably don’t do them right for optimum benefits anyways, but I really do love naps. Allowing me to go to sleep without disturbing me for about an hour would be the most amazing positive reinforcement EVER!!!! Yeah, that’s right. I would do just about anything for a good nap!

Sleep should occur long enough to heal and rest muscles, and energize your day. If you are having issues losing weight, and you are following your meal plans and exercising enough, the first place you should look are your sleeping habits. Without enough quality sleep, your body can’t function the way it should, and your health and well being will suffer.

So hurrah for me getting to practice my sleep. MUCH more enjoyable than yoga!

Tea Time

I’m not a coffee drinker. Hate the stuff! What I do like is a nice cuppa tea. And I like it the British way, too with cream and biscuits. But cream and biscuits aren’t that fantastic for you so I usually do without.

I’ve been drinking a buttload of tea the last few days as I’ve been under the weather. Chamomile has done a better job of putting me to slumber than even NyQuil (apparently NyQuil is only good for making me post silly messages). Chai and earl grey are great in the morning for me. Yes, I love English Breakfast teas.

I don’t even have a favorite brand but I could talk about all the stores and companies that I drink tea from- adagio (I still think it’s unfair that cousin Rebecca has an adagio store in her town) (I love love love their fandom teas and got a Doctor Who, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter set when I visited Naperville)and teavana have always been personal favorites. Twinings because you know, England and stuff, celestial seasons, tazo (local) and stash (also local) are among my favorites.

I have stopped putting sugar in my tea and only sweeten it with honey nowadays.

I really really don’t need any suggestions for teas to try, but now that I’m thinking about it, what do you guys like?

NyQuil NyQuil NyQuil! We love you, you giant effing Q!

I thought the body aches I was experiencing was from tightness and knots….they aren’t. I have a touch of the flu. So, sorry to everyone I’ve come in contact with the last 3-4 days. That includes everyone at LA Fitness and Core Power Yoga, even though I don’t know anyone there so I don’t really care.

So sleeping is what I need, and NyQuil has become my BFF! My head isn’t bothering me quite so much (bc I’m jacked up on NyQuil) but my body is just aching from head to toe.

In fitness and in health, we will deal with illness and injuries. No matter how badass you are, no matter how clean you eat. Those microscopic germs will get you and when they do, you must remember that while your body can endure a lot of things, taking care of yourself and allowing your body to heal by resting, eating foods that heal (even if that means you end up eating chicken on Meatless Monday), drinking plenty of water (and hot tea), and reading dumb irrelevant books. And Kiddy. And sheep socks.

Okay, NyQuil is kicking in again. Time for bed.

I’ll kick tomorrow’s ass! Or something.

100 Ways of Fitness Day 38

They see me Rollin’ they hatin’!

You know what exercises you can do when your sick? Well, technically anything you feel up to doing, but low impact and detoxing type are probably what will feel good.

I got sick over my weekend. I had no idea on Friday. Yesterday I was in complete denial. So I should probably apologize to the (good) folks at LA Fitness, but I don’t really know those people so I don’t really care. I will apologize to Brent but you consumed so much alcohol that any germs I was shedding were probably killed on contact.

I was going to write about Pilates and how awesome I feel after a pilates class but there was a substitute instructor and in the spirit of staying positive, I won’t tell you how amazingly horrible the class was. I’ll just leave that up to your imagination.

After the class from hell was over, I decided to roll out my tight legs. I had no idea how my legs had gotten so tight when I had JUST had a wonderful massage the day before (the flu, dumbass, you probably have the flipping flu). But rolling always does the trick.

I like to spend a good 15 minutes just rolling my quads, my calves, my hamstrings, and anything else that feels like they have been back talking my body. Puts them right in their place.

And for the hard to reach places, I have sone aroma therapy massage balls. Much smaller than a tennis ball( which I won’t bash- damn can a tennis ball do the trick), I place them under my shoulder and back and just lay on the ground writhing in what probably looks like a scene from 50 Shades of Grey (haven’t read the books but I’m kinda smart, I got that thing figured out).

So if you have never rolled on a foam roller before, do yourself and your wonderful body a huge favor and go get some of that action! Trust me, your body will thank me!

Just relax

Today I woke up aching from head to toe. My head was throbbing (didn’t make much sense since I drank my 20 oz right before bed and didn’t have any alcohol), my quads were knotted and tight like they’ve been for the past two weeks, and my back was practically screaming at me.

I went to my yoga class, which was an intro to hot yoga. It wasn’t too bad! They kept the room a few degrees cooler than normal hot yoga, and they turned off the humidity, so it wasn’t quite the same, but I thought I did okay. My back was still a little sore and my legs were killing me, so I decided it was high time I held my promise to do something nice for my body.

I got a ninety minute massage. It felt great, don’t get me wrong, but I think the poor masseuse thought something was terribly wrong with me. I had knots on top of knots all over my body. I mean’ my THUMBS had knots. It took him about 20 minutes on my back kneading out the knots before he could start the relaxation part. I’m pretty sure the grunting and groaning didn’t help his confidence either, but it felt fantastic.

The only problem is three hours after my massage’ my back still felt great, my neck was great, yes, my thumbs were fine, but my quads are super tight again. Im about to roll them out for the second time today, but I need to get this figured out already.

One Good Thing Deserves Another

I’m struggling with negativity in my life right now.

It’s hard to work on improving my wellbeing when I feel so much pressure that I might explode.

So to take some of this pressure off, I think a gratitude list is in order.

I was going to list just one thing- but wouldn’t you know, when I started going through to find pictures, i immediately was reminded of several good things. That’s how gratitude works, isn’t it?

So, in no particular order:

  • Belugas- no I haven’t played with a beluga in over 6 years. The fact that belugas EXIST puts them on my gratitude list. They are perfection in the form of a beautiful arctic angel.
  • Danger Russ – I wouldn’t call you my work husband, but I can’t thank you enough for putting up with me Tuesdays- Thursdays, and being so understanding. I appreciate you and am grateful that someone like you is there.
  • The Kid- you cannot, I mean, CANNOT be in a bad mood around this cat. It’s physically impossible
  • Karen – mah babe! My sexy sexy gurl! I love how you continue to inspire me. You inspire hundreds of people, even those you’ve never met or even know who you are. Your awesomeness inspires me. And those I inspire have you to thank also.¬†Ps- I love the shit out of you!
  • Chris : okay, I lied. This one is at the top of my gratitude list. Because I WAS going to write a whole post on how amazing this guy is! And not just because he’s sexy. Well, I mean, he’s dead sexy but that’s not even remotely the point. I came home and told him I had a lousy day, and he decides I need a back rub. And he notices when I do nice things for him, which makes me want to do nice things for him all the time. Like make chicken soup for him when he’s feeling sick. And he encourages me. Even when I’m down, Chris is my number one cheerleader.

I’m doing all right.

My evening routine is not becoming quite as routine as I’d like but I’m working on it. Yoga isn’t quite as enjoyable as I’d hoped I’d find it but I’m working on that too.

I haven’t gotten around to writing anything more than my posts but I’ll work on that too.

I am a work in progress. One day at a time. I am not just going to survive, I will come out the other side of these struggles stronger, smarter, and better!

100 Ways of Fitness Day 35: Part 2

Yoga cheater

Funny thing happened at the yoga studio today. Not yoga. I went in and was asked if I was doing the beginners class or Ryder class. Ryder class? What’s that? Oh, it on a Real Ryder, and works your core while working out. Sure, why not? Oh, you’ll love it.

Compared to yoga, I DID love it. Because it wasn’t yoga! It wasn’t remotely close to yoga. It was a fracking SPIN class on this bike that would lean left or right and would wobble in your hands when you stood up out of your saddle.

It was WAY better than yoga for me! I was already pumped about getting my bike tuned up, and now I get to do a SPIN CLASS at a yoga studio?!?! Yes, please.

Of course, this doesn’t help me achieve my goal for the month, so as much as I may have liked it (and that’s still relative, spin class has NOTHING on a real bike nor even close to a Crossfit WOD), I don’t think I’ll do it again because I need to practice yoga. I can do a spin class anywhere. Well, pretty much anywhere.

So back to beginners class tomorrow. Bye pretty Ryder. It was fun.

Getting ready for BIKE season!!!!

I got extremely excited last week with a mild “heat wave” hitting us with the lows in the fifties. I thought I was being clever and prepared when I decided to make my appointment for my bike tune up this week (besides the fact my groupon expired this week- that had nothing to do with it) (that’s a lie, it had A LOT to do with it). So my hopes were almost crushed when Gregg’s Cycle said they were booked up until the 6th. But they are honoring my groupon as long as I got my bike in before the expiration date.

So I decided today was the day. I took Little Sexy in and dropped her off. But what I’m REALLY excited about is riding with my new seat! Siriusly! I’ve been riding on a broomstick handle for two years! This new seat feels like a fracking couch! My butt is thrilled!

Bike will be ready Saturday. Does this mean biking season starts Sunday? Maaaaaybe!



100 Ways of Fitness Day 34

Chug chug!

This is a cheat post. Well, sorta cheat post. I mean, I did accomplish it today but it’s just kind of lame. So I’ll try to spruce up the idea of drinking water with a little backstory. I know Brent and Kate are going to LOVE this! No cliff notes! Just me rambling on about sleep and well-being and drinking water!

I don’t sleep well. I suck at sleeping. I’m hot. My body is all tight- last few nights my quads have been so tight I couldn’t sleep. And I actually think my body or brain, one of these actually gets BORED with sleeping! It’s ridiculous.

One thing I’ve been trying to do and it’s a big go for February is to create an evening routine that sorta works with my well adjusted and habituated morning routine.

For my mornings, I start each morning with 20 oz of water. Before I do anything I drink 20 oz of water. Take my supplements. Then my morning starts.

So I’m trying to also create the habit of drinking 20 oz at the end of my day. And so far I’ve been doing great. The first few nights I had to get up several times throughout the night but now I think my body is really getting accustomed to it.

To be honest though, I’m not seeing a tremendous change yet. I’m still hot. Body temperature hasn’t regulated yet. My legs still hurt, but I’m working on that with my foam roller, and Chris has even offered to help by rubbing the knots out. And I’ve got knots. I need a long deep tissue massage, and I need it yesterday, but I’ll get to that eventually.

But like all habits that stick, I bet if I give this evening routine a shot for the whole month that I’ll be sleeping way better (I can’t wait for that to happen either!)

I know the water in the morning had increased my energy levels tremendously. I feel awake and refreshed each morning and I’m pretty sure the water has a lot to do with it. I mean, staying hydrated throughout the day works wonders on my energy levels too.

So I’m going to continue to work on that goal. Keep chugging away!
