30 Days of ZooFit: Day 23- ZooFit’s Guide to Mental Health

I tote a lot of advice and promotion to physical health and well-being, but rarely touch on the topic of mental health. Perhaps because I think of myself as a little mentally unstable, I don’t think I’m qualified to share on the subject. But fear not, while I remain mostly crazy, I do have thoughts on getting mentally fit as well as physically. And yes, it revolves around having fun and saving the earth.  Continue reading 30 Days of ZooFit: Day 23- ZooFit’s Guide to Mental Health

30 Days of ZooFit: Day 22- Everyday is Earth Day

There are few exciting holidays for zookeepers. Christmas and Thanksgiving are often spent with our fur/feather/scaled families because, guess what? Animals have to eat. Daily. It’s weird, I know. But such is life of a zookeeper.

Know what holidays zookeepers DO get excited over? April 22. Earth Day. It’s not exactly celebrated by everyone, but it is an important day for zookeepers. Earth Day is the one day out of the year everyone gets to be a zookeeper and care for the planet. Continue reading 30 Days of ZooFit: Day 22- Everyday is Earth Day

30 Days of ZooFit: Day 21- Life Safari

One of my current favorite books right now is Nerd Fitness founder, Steve Kamb’s book Level Up Your Life. I really admire this book on a whole new level after experiencing the difficulties to get published in this industry. But beyond Steve being a literary hero, he’s a life hero to me as well. Continue reading 30 Days of ZooFit: Day 21- Life Safari

30 Days of ZooFit: Day 20- Watoto’s Rumble

I’ve often wondered how it would feel for someone to love me so much, they peed whenever they saw me.

This was how Bamboo, a fifty-year old Asian elephant, greeted her best friend, retired zookeeper Chuck, whenever he visited. She would squeal with excitement, and when she couldn’t contain herself anymore, Bamboo would relieve herself. It was a sight to see. Continue reading 30 Days of ZooFit: Day 20- Watoto’s Rumble

30 Days of ZooFit: Day 16- Double Workout, a Healthy Obsession

A few years ago, when I became serious about getting in shape, I was gung ho. I joined a gym, signed up for a weight loss challenge, and began a journey which would lead many friends (but mostly non-friends) to claim I was obsessed. Continue reading 30 Days of ZooFit: Day 16- Double Workout, a Healthy Obsession

30 Days of ZooFit: Day 11- Healthy Hygiene Habits

I’m definitely no beauty queen, but I recognize that taking care of myself doesn’t only apply to my diet and exercise program. Daily hygiene is definitely a part of ZooFit, as they are habits we can take to the next level while still promoting a healthy environment.

Some of these habits include brushing and flossing our teeth, taking care of our skin and face, washing, and even our hair. Continue reading 30 Days of ZooFit: Day 11- Healthy Hygiene Habits

30 Days of ZooFit: Day 10- Hug Your Farmer

Have you hugged your farmer today?

I almost missed my chance to do so. Every year, Chris and I sign up for a CSA- community supported agriculture. Last year, though, we received some bad news. Our normal farm-share, Ebb Tide, was closing up shop. We needed to find another farm.

Luckily we live on Whidbey Island, a farmer market’s wet dream. There are several farms selling shares, and we easily found one close to us. Skyroot Farm. Continue reading 30 Days of ZooFit: Day 10- Hug Your Farmer

30 Days of ZooFit: Day 9- The Return of the Sloth Army

“We run. We’re slower than a herd of sloths stampeding through a batch of nutella. But we run.” Continue reading 30 Days of ZooFit: Day 9- The Return of the Sloth Army

30 Days of ZooFit: Day 3- Cut Plastic Out Challenge

I have a lot of ideas I am hoping to try this year. This 30 Day of ZooFit Challenge is one of them. Some of these ideas are social media conservation fitness campaigns I hope to share, and I’m practicing one of them now. I call it “Cut It Out” Plastic Challenge.
